Munsell N7 is a widely used neutral gray background for visual color assessment. The light gray provides a neutral backdrop that optimally supports the perception of light to medium-dark colors.

Munsell N5 is significantly darker and is specifically required when evaluating predominantly dark or high-gloss surfaces. It reduces background glare.

  • Ideal for: Automotive industry (specific OEM specifications), dark coatings, high-gloss deep tones, plastics, cosmetics
  • Application: Preventing the "glare effect" (overexposure of the eye) when dark samples are viewed against a background that is too bright.

Why Gray?

A coating in an achromatic neutral gray (e.g., Munsell N5 or N7) is absolutely mandatory for objective and standard-compliant color matching.

Gray is the perfect choice for three main reasons:

  1. No physical light distortion: A color-neutral background reflects all incoming wavelengths of light evenly and does not cast a color tint back onto the sample.
  2. Protection against optical illusions: Gray prevents simultaneous contrast, a phenomenon where a color is perceived incorrectly by the human eye due to the color of its immediate surroundings.
  3. Optimal reflection level: Unlike extreme backgrounds, gray prevents both glare (white backgrounds make samples appear darker) and excessive contrast (black backgrounds make colors glow artificially).

Consequently, gray serves as a fatigue-free visual anchor, enabling a completely isolated and precise assessment of the actual material color.
