Munsell N7 (Light Gray)

Munsell N5 (Medium Gray)
Munsell N5 is significantly darker and is specifically required when evaluating predominantly dark or high-gloss surfaces. It reduces background glare.

Why Gray?
A coating in an achromatic neutral gray (e.g., Munsell N5 or N7) is absolutely mandatory for objective and standard-compliant color matching.
Gray is the perfect choice for three main reasons:
- No physical light distortion: A color-neutral background reflects all incoming wavelengths of light evenly and does not cast a color tint back onto the sample.
- Protection against optical illusions: Gray prevents simultaneous contrast, a phenomenon where a color is perceived incorrectly by the human eye due to the color of its immediate surroundings.
- Optimal reflection level: Unlike extreme backgrounds, gray prevents both glare (white backgrounds make samples appear darker) and excessive contrast (black backgrounds make colors glow artificially).
Consequently, gray serves as a fatigue-free visual anchor, enabling a completely isolated and precise assessment of the actual material color.
