Gloss measurement
Gloss is a visual impression that depends on the surface texture. The more direct light is reflected, the greater the impression of gloss.
A gloss meter measures the mirror reflection. The light intensity is registered over a small range of the reflection angle. The angle at which the light is incident is equal to the angle of reflection.

Gloss ranges – High gloss to matt gloss
In order to obtain a clear differentiation over the entire measuring range from high gloss to matt, three different measuring ranges were defined.
Definition of the gloss ranges
Matt gloss
- 60° value: <10
- To be measured with: 85° Geometry
Medium gloss
- 60° value: 10 to 70
- To be measured with: 60° Geometry
High gloss
- 60° value: >70
- To be measured with: 20° Geometry

Application of gloss measurement
Angles from matt gloss to high gloss and the corresponding standards.

ERICHSEN Testing Equipment
ERICHSEN is involved, among other things, with demand-oriented testing of high-quality surfaces. As a partner to users and research, and through long-standing collaboration with standard-relevant committees, we have established a range of test instruments over the years with which quality-related properties of many products can be determined precisely and conveniently.
