Evaluation of the cross-cut value

Information on determining and evaluating the cross-cut characteristic value based on ISO 2409.

Example of a comparison table visually based on ISO 2409 for analysing the cross hatch cutting test and evaluating the cross hatch cut:

Beurteilung des Gitterschnitts – Kennwert 0 & 5

Value 0

Perfectly smooth cut edges, without chipping.

A perfectly clean imaged cross-cut screen without any coating loss.

Beurteilung des Gitterschnitts – Kennwert 1

Value 1

Slight chipping at the intersections of the grid lines.

Chipped area not greater than 5 % of the grid cut area.

Beurteilung des Gitterschnitts – Kennwert 2

Value 2

Spalling along the cut edges and/or at the intersections of the grid lines.

Chipped area greater than 5 % but not greater than 15 % of the grid cut area.

Beurteilung des Gitterschnitts – Kennwert 3

Value 3

Chipping along the cut edges and/or of squares (whole + partial).

Chipped area greater than 15 % but not greater than 35 % of the grid cut area.

Beurteilung des Gitterschnitts – Kennwert 4

Value 4

Chipping along the cut edges and/or of squares (whole + partial).

chipped area greater than 35 % but not greater than 65 % of the grid cut area.

Beurteilung des Gitterschnitts – Kennwert 0 & 5

Value 5

Spalling whose coating loss is significantly more than 65% of the total grid cut area.

And which therefore can no longer be assessed with a characteristic value of 4.

ERICHSEN Testing Equipment

ERICHSEN is involved, among other things, with demand-oriented testing of high-quality surfaces. As a partner to users and research, and through long-standing collaboration with standard-relevant committees, we have established a range of test instruments over the years with which quality-related properties of many products can be determined precisely and conveniently.
