Sheet Metal Testing

As materials change and manufacturing processes become increasingly complex, the demands placed on testing methods are becoming ever more challenging. The focus is still on fast, reproducible and reliable material characterisation. It is of crucial importance for process and quality control as well as for component and tool development.

Quality control in industrial production

Quality control and assurance has become increasingly important over the past decades and is now one of the most important tasks in all areas of industrial production.

Erichsen cupping test

For almost 100 years a test method to determine the level of quality of sheet metal exists. Abraham M. Erichsen is considered the inventor of the cupping test and he patented this test method in the early 20th Century. Meanwhile, the cupping test is adopted by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and therefore valid worldwide in all industrial applications. It serves as a quick and cost-efficient incoming goods inspection and is sometimes applied directly in production.

Deep-drawing cup test

Another coup of Mr. Erichsen was the development of a special tool for deep-drawing cup test in 1932. Without this testing procedure the series production of hollow bodies made of sheet metal would hardly be possible up to the present day.

Feature of the method: to punch out round disks from sheet metal strip and then use it to shape it with a drawing die to a cup. In this way, the quality characteristic “formability of sheet metal” is of great importance in current productions.

Modern solutions for a wide range of sheet metal forming tests

ERICHSEN sheet metal testing machines are suitable for a large number of sheet metal forming tests (Erichsen cupping tests, deep-drawing cup tests, bulge tests, FLC tests, etc.).

Erichsen cupping machines

Classic tests such as the Erichsen cupping test are still indispensable for the preparation of forming processes.

Universal sheet metal testing machines

Classic test methods such as the Erichsen cupping test and the deep-drawing cup test are still indispensable for the preparation of forming processes. However, they are increasingly being supplemented by alternative methods. New materials and their combinations, such as in vehicle construction, make it necessary to always select the most suitable test method.

Special testing machines

In addition to the classics of sheet metal testing, we offer special measuring and testing machines for individual and less frequently used applications such as bulge tests, hot tensile tests and earing eavluations.
